Top 5 Movie Guns
For a place that doesn't like firearms, Hollywood sure does feature them in a lot of there movies. From westerns to an action thriller, firearms are the mainstay in Hollywood feature films. These are my top 5 most iconic movie guns. In no particular order.
Die-Hards Beretta 92, this is what I imagine most people who aren't into guns think of when they think of a handgun. The berretta 92 was the army's sidearm for a long time and the choice of Bruce Willis character John McClane in this Christmas classic. I bounced John Wick for this pick mostly because John Wick has so many guns it's hard to pick. Also, check out my budget John Wick blog here. Either way, the first spot goes to John McClanes Beretta 92.
The next is John Wayne's lever-action, with the big old loop on the lever. Whether he was playing Rooster Cogburn or Hondo, the duke always had that Winchester with the extra-large loop close by. I'll give the nod to Danny Glover and his Henry from the movie Silverado, but no western lever-action touches John Wayne's Winchester.
Dirty Harry, you feeling lucky? Are you punk? You can't leave off the .44, it'll take your head clean off if you do. Clint Eastwood is an intimidating person, with the squint and talking out of the side of his mouth. Now throw in that smith and Wesson .44 magnum, and every criminal in the bay area is shaking. Throw in the Garand he is wielding in Gran Torino, and Clint has an arsenal that will make anyone jealous.
Jerimiah Johnson Hawkins flintlock muzzleloader. This speaks to my love of black power. Robert Redford as a mountain man running through the mountain with a muzzleloader, uh sign me up. It's been a while since I've seen this movie so, my knowledge of it isn't as strong, but just the fact of an old school traditional muzzleloader in the hand of a mountain man on the big screen makes me happy.
Quigley down under, alright this is the most exciting gun on the list, quoting straight from the movie and the IMDB page it is a,
Sharps 1874 Long Range rifle with a 34" barrel (4" s longer than a standard 30" barrel) converted to fire a. 45-110 metallic cartridge with a 540-grain paper-patch bullet."
single shot breach loading two trigger lever-action rifles. That shoots a special round. Tom Selleck runs it to perfection, a sniper in the outback of Australia, taking down Aussie gangs and saving the aboriginals. This gun interests me so much, everything about it is different. The barrel that is 4 inches longer than the original just to give him a little more reach. It is a single shot, meaning he has to be that much better, and somehow, he manages to outshoot three bad guys with six-shooters. I don't know-how and definitely some movie magic on that one but still. The skill it would take to be that deadly and quick with a single shot rifle is impressive. Mathew Quigley's rifle is definitely my favorite gun on this list.
There it is my top 5 most iconic movie guns. I could have made this list five times longer, but these are the five I went with. Let me know in the comments which I snubbed and your favorites, my favorite ones will be featured on the podcast next week.
